Under 11s League Cup – 27th September 2009 Branton Jnrs 6 – Bessacarr FC 8 Bessacarr’s first foray into the league cup saw them away to old adversary Branton Juniors. It was always expected to be a tight game but nobody could have expected things to unfold the way they did. Bessacarr started tentatively and after only a few minutes found themselves a goal down. Without letting this get to them Bessacarr continued to play there own game and began to pressure the Branton defence. Reward from the continued pressure came when Johan Southern picked up a loose ball in the Branton area and coolly fired it into the bottom right corner to level the scores at 1 – 1. This had the effect of boosting the Bessacarr players’ confidence and they began to dominate proceedings. Bessacarr’s second goal came soon after when Carl Harden took a well timed pass from Will Morley through the centre of the Branton defence and skilfully chipped the keeper (1 – 2). Bessacarr’s third goal came thanks to a Johan Southern solo effort, after picking up the ball from the half way line Southern charged up the left wing to score from an almost impossibly wide angle (1 – 3). At 3 – 1 many teams would have let their heads drop but Branton, to their credit, stuck to the task and, helped by some Bessacarr defensive gaffs, fired in two in quick succession to level the scores at 3 – 3. Almost straight from the kick-off the ball was fed wide right to Alex O’Malley who was brought down illegally just outside the Branton area. A deft Carl Harden free kick found Eddie Fisher in the middle of the Branton area who volleyed in from close range (3 – 4). The half time whistle followed soon after. Bessacarr’s lead was extended to two goals early in the second half when Jared Green’s pace took him up the right past the Branton defence to the edge of the area where he unleashed an unstoppable strike into the top left corner of the Branton goal (3 – 5). Again perhaps it was the two goal advantage but Bessacarr seemed to go to sleep and back came Branton with two more quick goals to even it up again (5 – 5). Back to square one again Bessacarr stuck to the task brilliantly and their sixth goal came from Tom Humphreys who intercepted a weak Branton goal kick, made a superb run up the left and slid the ball past the keeper from wide left. With full time looming things were looking good for the Bessacarr victory when Branton yet again snatched an equalizer after the ball had pinged around the Bessacarr area and was prodded in (6 – 6). The full time whistle came very soon after bringing the prospect of extra time. The ten minutes each way extra time saw Bessacarr settle down to play some fine football and dominate possession. It was inevitable, then, that Carl Harden would complete his hat-trick by grabbing a goal in each half to settle the final score at 6 – 8. Man of the Match was given to Tom Dangerfield – he kept his nerve to pull off three fine saves in extra time despite the torrid time he’d had previously.
