U11 (Friendly) Thorne Colliery 4 - 4 Bessacarr FC PDF Print E-mail

With no league game this weekend, the boys had a chance to test themselves in a friendly against Thorne, who play one division higher than Bessacarr.  The game started at a frantic pace, mainly due to the fact that the pitch was a lot smaller than the ones the boys had got used to playing on.  The boys looked in a determined mood as they put in some strong tackles from the start.  However, it was Thorne who took the lead with a bizarre and rather freakish goal.  A goal kick from Jacob was volleyed back from the half way line, and as it sailed over his head he chased it back, only to see the ball bounce up and off the underside of the bar, before hitting him and creeping over the line (don't worry Jacob, if you play until you're 40, you won't concede another one like that!).  Although Bessacarr fought back, it was Thorne who added to their lead twice, and went in at half time with a rather flattering 3-0 lead.  Bessacarr started off the 2nd half determined to get back into the game, and finally got their reward when Cameron pulled a goal back.  Thorne soon added to their score at the other end to make it 4-1, however the boys sensed that they still weren't out of the game and kept pushing forward.  The fightback started, as Oscar broke through to get a well deserved 2nd goal, and within a couple of minutes Ross got 3rd, and soon after that Cameron got his 2nd to equalise the scores at 4-4.  Despite their attempts they couldn't find a winner, and as the ref blew for full time all the coaches and parents gave both sides an ovation for a thoroughly entertaining game.  Every one of the boys had played their part in a geat performance and it seemed a shame to single out anyone in particular for man of the match, as they had all showed great determination and put in probably their best team performance of the season - well done, and keep it up boys!

U11 Bessacarr FC 3 - 1 Barnby Dun Colts PDF Print E-mail

After back to back wins, the boys were looking forward to making it a hat trick against Barnby Dun, and with everybody available except Brandon, hopes were high again. They kicked off and straight from the whistle went on to the attack. As the boys put some good moves together down each wing, it only seemed a matter of time before they got an opening goal, and the breakthrough came when Ross managed to weave his way through the middle (without bumping his head!) and put a low shot into the net to make it 1-0. However, Barnby Dun didn’t lie down, and the Bessacarr defence had to be on their guard as they tried to break away several times. The boys defended well, leaving Jacob with little to do, and kept their own attacks coming. Emil found himself clear on the left of the penalty area and moved in on goal. His shot wasn't held by the Barnby Dun keeper, and Jay G managed to put in the rebound…but unfortunately the linesman's flag had already gone up, which was spotted by the eagle-eyed referee and the goal was disallowed for offside. However, almost straight from the free kick, Bessacarr won the ball back, and Jay G found himself in on goal again, this time onside, and another low shot made it 2-0. In spite of several more chances the score remained this way until half time. With several changes being made, it was Bessacarr who started the second half on the attack once again, with Rhys and Joe also managing to get forward in support. After a few minutes, a corner from Emil on the right found Rhys at the near post, and his powerful header (Shearer!) made it 3-0. The boys could sense there were more goals to come, but try as they did they couldn’t find a way through. Barnby Dun continued to be a threat on the break, and although Christian and Thomas managed to deal with a few dangerous breaks, they finally managed to pull a goal back towards the end. In spite of a couple of minutes added time, there was no further score, and the game finished in another 3-1 victory. Again, some really good periods of play by the boys, who worked hard as a team, and should again feel proud of their performance. Another well deserved victory!

U11 Ordsall Rangers 'B' 0 - 2 Bessacarr FC PDF Print E-mail

Confidence was high after last week's first victory of the season, especially with the better weather and playing conditions. The boys went straight onto the attack from the kick off, and immediately put Ordsall under pressure. The midfield and strikers worked well together down both wings, and put together some great passing moves. With plenty of crosses coming over, and shots being fired in, it only seemed like a matter of time before the ball would end up in the net, but some desperate defending by Ordsall kept the boys out. Brandon went close with a near post header, Rhys had a shot well saved, and Henry, Oscar, Jack C and Jay G all also had shots saved as the Ordsall goal led a charmed life. Finally the breakthrough came when Jay G pounced on a lose ball in the area and drove it into the bottom corner to make it 1-0. A full 15 minutes had passed before Ordsall made their first break into Bessacarr's half, and Rhys, Jack R, Thomas and Joe had to be on their toes. Half time arrived with no further score, but with the boys well on top. After a couple of changes, the second half started in the same manner, with Emil, Ant and Danny coming into midfield. The waves of attacks continued without bringing any more goals, and it started to get a little worrying that the score remained at 1-0 (...well it did for Martin & myself anyway). Ordsall's breaks became a little more frequent, with Christian having to use his pace to get back several times to cover, and Jacob having to make one or two saves. Towards the end of the game however, Oscar managed to break free and put a low shot into the corner to make it 2-0, which allowed us to breathe a little easier. The full time whistle went after another excellent performance by all the boys. If we were to be picky at all, they should have won by a much greater margin, and maybe they need to be a bit more clinical in front of goal, but nevertheless, it was 3 points well deserved - well done boys!

U11 Bessacarr FC 3 – 1 West End Bentley PDF Print E-mail

In spite of the miserable wet weather, this match presented the boys with a chance to put last week’s heavy defeat behind them.  Bessacarr kicked off and quickly took control of the game, with Jack R, Emil, Jay W and Cameron in particular linking up together well down the left.  The boys started to get forward in numbers, but weren’t really able to create any clear chances, as Bentley defended solidly and looked threatening on the break.  Jacob and the defence were kept on their toes, and dealt comfortably with any attacks until mid-way through the first half, when the ref expertly spotted Danny pulling a Bentley player back by the shirt, leaving him with no alternative but to award a penalty (sorry Danny).  Jacob had no chance with the resulting kick, and it was Bentley who went into half time leading 1-0.  With a couple of changes at half time, and the rain continuing to fall, Bessacarr started the second half well.  Oscar started to get further forward and had a long shot well saved, before breaking through the Bentley defence and hitting a low shot across the keeper into the corner for a well deserved equaliser.  With their tails up, the boys started to push for a winner, and Rhys had a long shot well saved by the Bentley keeper, before Brandon got the ball in a crowded area.  With challenges flying in from all directions, he somehow turned his marker and was brought down as he lined up a shot – again, well spotted by the ref! – for a penalty.  Rhys stepped up and coolly put it in the bottom corner to give the boys the lead.  As the boys poured forward, Bentley didn’t lie down and continued to break quickly requiring Jacob to make a couple of important saves.  As time was running out, Jack C went on a mazy dribble into the left side of the Bentley area, and managed to beat the keeper with a low shot – with Rhys coming in on the far post to make sure, the ball crossed the line to make it 3-1.

A great performance by the boys in terrible conditions, and it was really encouraging to see that they didn’t let their heads go down when they fell behind, and worked hard to fight their way back into the game.  Well done & same again next week?

(MoM = Rhys).
